A hedgehog is any of the spiny mammals of the subfamily Erinaceinae and the order Erinaceomorpha. There are 16 species of hedgehog in five genera, found through parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and New Zealand. There are no hedgehogs native to Australia, and no living species native to North America; those in New Zealand are introduced. Hedgehogs have changed little over the last 15 million years. Like many of the first mammals they have adapted to a nocturnal, insectivorous way of life. The name 'hedgehog' came into use around the year 1450, derived from the Middle English 'heyghoge', from 'heyg', 'hegge' = hedge, because it frequents hedgerows, and 'hoge', 'hogge' = hog, from its piglike snout.[2] Other folk names include 'urchin', 'hedgepig' and 'furze-pig' .

How to Make Homemade Chicken Dog Treats

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup of cornmeal
  • 2 cubes of bullion
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cups of milk (soy is preferred)
  • 3/4 pound of chicken (ground or shredded chicken is preferred)
  • One large mixing bowl
  • One small mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • A fork or whisk
  • An electric or battery-powered mixer
  • Two large cookie sheets
  • An oven
Step1
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step2
Obtain and set out all of your ingredients and tools.
Step3
Begin by measuring out the dry ingredients - 2 cups of whole wheat flour, 1 cup of cornmeal and 3/4 pound of shredded or ground chicken. Combine these ingredients in the large mixing bowl.
Step4
Mix all of the ingredients using your hands.
Step5
In a small mixing bowl, combine the wet ingredients - 3/4 cups of milk, 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil and two eggs.
Step6
Crumble two cubes of chicken or beef bullion into the small mixing bowl containing the wet ingredients.
Step7
Mix all of the wet ingredients and bullion using a whisk or fork. Mix until the bullion has dissolved completely.
Step8
Pour the wet ingredients in the small mixing bowl into the large mixing bowl with all of the dry ingredients.
Step9
Use a mixer to combine the wet and dry ingredients into a dough.
Step10
Remove about one-third of the dough at a time, place the dough on a floured surface. Add 1/2 cup of flour at a time and knead until the dough is of a medium consistency. Step11 Use a rolling pin to flatten out the dough to 3/4 or 1/8 inch thickness, depending on your preference. Keep in mind thinner dog treats will bake faster. Step12 Use your favorite cookie cutter or a rolling pizza cutter to divide the dough into individual treats. Step13 Place the treats on a cookie sheet, spaced 1/2 inch apart. Step14 Place the cookie sheet inside the preheated oven and bake for 18 to 23 minutes or until golden brown. Step15 Allow the treats to cool and serve!
