How to Make a Cat Bed

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Old sweater
  • Faux fur
  • Old down pillow
  • Stuffing material or batting
  • Needle and thread
  • Basket or box
  • Pinking shears
  • Double sided tape
Step1
Pay attention to how and where your cat sleeps. Most cats sleep curled up on something soft that forms a nest around them, such as a pillow or soft comfy chair. However, some cats prefer to sleep stretched out. The cat bed design should reflect how your cat normally sleeps.
Step2
Use an old comfy sweater to make a simple nest-type cat bed. Your cat won't care what color his bed is so choose one that suits your decor. Sew the bottom of the sweater shut. Stuff the body of the sweater with stuffing material or you can even use crumpled plastic grocery bags, which keep their shape practically forever. Sew the neck shut. Using yarn and a large blunt needle works well.
Step3
Stuff the arms of the sweater like sausages until they are nice and rounded. Now sew the arms around the edge of the stuffed sweater to make a bolster around the whole bed. This is an excellent and comfy bed for most cats.
Step4
Use a basket or even a heavy cardboard box big enough for your cat to curl up in for another nesting type cat bed. Faux fur is very inexpensive, comes in many colors and patterns and can be used to line a basket or box. Cut it to shape with pinking shears. If you are not very crafty, use double sided tape to fix it to both the inside and the outside of the new cat bed.
Step5
Make a pillowcase out of soft, fluffy, washable fabric for a very easy cat bed. Put it over an old down pillow. Down pillows make excellent cat beds because they form to your cat's body.
Step6
Put the cat bed where your cat usually sleeps. To make it more enticing to him, sprinkle a little catnip or some good cat treats in it. If your cat doesn't have a particular napping spot, put the cat bed near a sunny window or heat register. Cats gravitate towards warm spots and often like to be able to look out of the window.
